However, addressing 14 risk factors throughout life, starting in childhood, could prevent or delay almost half of these cases, according to a comprehensive report by 27 dementia experts published by The Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, intervention, and care. This updated report adds high cholesterol and vision loss to the 12 previously identified risk factors, including less education, head injury, physical inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, hearing loss, depression, air pollution, and infrequent social contact. Dr. Gill Livingston, the report's lead author, emphasized the aim to provide reliable information and highlight research gaps to help individuals and governments. The new findings suggest that addressing the 14 risk factors could eliminate or delay 45% of dementia cases. The report underscores the critical need for policy and lifestyle changes, such as promoting quality education, reducing air pollution, and encouraging cognitively stimulating activities, regular exercise, and treatment for conditions like depression and high cholesterol. Public health leaders are urged to act on these recommendations to enhance brain health and reduce the global dementia burden. - Prolonged Sitting Tied to Heart Disease Risk, Even with Regular Exercise | Sherringford LLC
NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS 2 minutes news digest Go Go Go Prolonged sitting—more than 10.6 hours daily—significantly increases the risk of heart disease, even for individuals who exercise regularly, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology . Researchers analyzed data from nearly 90,000 participants who wore accelerometers, revealing a strong association between excessive sedentary time and cardiovascular conditions such as heart attack, stroke, and heart failure. While exercise is beneficial, it does not entirely counteract the adverse effects of extended sitting. The findings emphasize the need for integrating movement throughout the day, with researchers recommending frequent breaks to stimulate muscles and regulate blood sugar and fat levels. Although the study highlights critical health risks of sitting, it has limitations, such as its observational nature and lack of demographic diversity due to reliance on UK Biobank data. Experts, however, agree on the importance of reducing sedentary time by incorporating simple, consistent movement strategies, such as walking for a few minutes every half hour or conducting meetings on the go. Tools like treadmill desks or periodic movement breaks can mitigate the harmful effects of sitting. While exercise alone cannot neutralize these risks, it remains crucial for overall health and is far better than a completely sedentary lifestyle. - Impact of Trump Administration's Funding Cuts on HIV Research and the Fight Against the Epidemic | Sherringford LLC
NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS CURATED BY SHERRINGFORD NEWS 2 minutes news digest Go Go Go The Trump administration has recently terminated numerous federal grants supporting critical HIV research and prevention efforts, totaling tens of millions of dollars in funding. Over 60 projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have been cancelled, with a significant portion specifically focused on advancements in HIV care and prevention strategies. These abrupt cuts have disrupted ongoing studies at nearly two dozen universities and research institutions nationwide, leaving scientists scrambling to secure alternative funding and jeopardizing the continuation of vital work. Many of the affected projects were designed to improve access to HIV prevention drugs like PrEP in vulnerable communities, including trans women and Black men, who experience disproportionately higher rates of infection. The administration's justification for these sweeping cuts cites concerns that research related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) may support unlawful discrimination. However, public health experts and researchers are expressing grave concerns that these actions will severely impede progress in combating the HIV epidemic, potentially leading to a resurgence of infections and preventable deaths. They argue that defunding this crucial research will dismantle the infrastructure built over decades, erode the nation's scientific capacity in this area, and ultimately set back efforts to eliminate HIV in the United States. This move contradicts the administration's previous stated goal of ending the HIV epidemic by 2030, raising fears of long-term negative consequences for public health and the well-being of affected communities.
