Medical Assistant

The professional certification for Medical Assistant is a process through which the American Medical Technologists formally recognize individuals who meet predetermined and standardized criteria to perform this role in the United States. The certification process involves determining eligibility and taking a competency exam.

The exam consists of 210 questions. Candidates will have three (3) hours to complete the computer-based exam. The exam questions are single-selection multiple-choice. All exam content is developed based on U.S. practice and is offered only in English.

Eligibility Requirements:

All individuals seeking certification must meet one of the two established eligibility requirements:

A) The applicant must have worked as a medical assistant for a minimum of 3 years within the last 7 years. These 3 years of employment must be full-time, with no less than 36 hours per week. The experience must include both clinical and administrative tasks.

B) If the applicant is an international medical graduate, they must have 1 to 3 years of experience as a physician.

Required Documents:

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; or a medical degree if you are an international medical graduate.

AHA-accredited Basic Life Support course. If you don't have it, you can take it with us. For more information, you can check here.

Form verifying the 3 years of experience.

The form serves to collect evidence of 1 to 3 years of work experience performing clinical and administrative activities equivalent to or greater than the role of a medical assistant. The EMPLOYMENT VERIFICATION FORM must bear the employer's company seal or stamp, which must be printed on the form. Digital seals or logos are not accepted. A form will be provided.

The Exam:

Once the registration fee is paid, you will be provided with study materials covering the exam's subject areas, as well as question banks and a practice exam. During this time, your eligibility for the exam will be checked, and you will receive a notice that your application has been approved along with instructions for taking the exam. Upon approval, candidates have access to the exam on demand, meaning the student can choose their exam date, up to a one-year limit. The exam is not available on the following holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, and Independence Day.

The exam is conducted on a secure platform and administered via live remote proctoring through the computer and cell phone camera. Candidates can take the exam from home or the office, as long as they meet the hardware, software, and site requirements to ensure a controlled and secure testing environment. The exam will be supervised by qualified proctors trained by the exam management provider (PearsonVUE). For more information about the online exam, you can check here.

Candidates may also choose to take the exam at a testing center selected based on proximity.

Cost:

The entire process costs $250.00 (two hundred fifty U.S. dollars), and the estimated time for approval and authorization to select the exam date is less than 5 business days. Once the exam is passed, you will be emailed a copy of the certificate that includes your registration number, along with a membership card.
